When we were leaving the venue a fan came up to Dr. Jane with a stack of photographs in his hand. She greeted him with a smile, understanding what was happening before I did, immediately took his marker and began signing.

“Are you going to sell these on eBay?”, Dr. Jane asked, half joking, “They’re for my sister”, he replied. “What’s your sister’s name?” “Jennifer”, he answered. She wrote Jennifer’s name along with a personalized message of Hope.

Suddenly we realized there wasn’t just one photograph, or two, there were several more. One of Dr. Jane in Gombe, another from her appearance on "The Simpsons" - all beautifully printed in color glossy 8 x 10’s with a frame.

“How many are there… 4?” I asked, “There are 6” he replied. “We’ll have to make this the last one.”, I said. Dr. Jane’s colleague echoed my sentiments. As Jane finished signing the 4th card, I went to take the marker from her hand, but I could not.

The car was waiting on the bustling streets of downtown Brooklyn to take Dr. Jane to her next commitment. Her day likely began before the sun came up that morning, she’d just been on stage for an hour, and spent another few hours connecting with people after the event - none of that mattered.

She pulled the marker out of my hands, signed and personalized the final photo and said a few kind words to the young man.

“He’s been waiting out here all day, the least I can do is sign the photographs.”

With that I opened the door to the car and kissed Dr. Jane and her colleague goodbye.

This is yet another example of Dr. Jane’s tireless commitment to inspire hope and to connect with people on a truly personal level. She could have very easily walked outside, signed one photograph, or none for that matter, and went on to her next commitment. But she didn’t, she stayed, she smiled, she served, all without the cameras being on….

That is one of the countless reasons why Dr. Jane Goodall is a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
